Distinctive engineering connection details

I came across this impressive arrangement of bolts for a column to beam connection in an indoor swimming pool. I liked that the engineer went to the trouble of designing a circular bolting arrangement for this glulam timber frame. It is more aesthetically pleasing but was more difficult to design. Its nice to see in these difficult times when fees are being squeezed that engineers are still taking the time to design distinctive details. Continue reading

The Airbus A320 and the miracle on the Hudson

I recently finished reading a book called ‘Fly by wire’ by William Langewiesche. It’s an enjoyable and easy read, despite some technical detail, about the events surrounding the crash landing of an Airbus A320 on the Hudson River, New York, in January 2009. This book gives an excellent argument for sharing the recognition for the fortunate outcome of the crash between the pilots and the plane designers and I would highly recommend it for an interesting and strangely addictive read. Snap, said my car engines timing belt

The timing belt in my car has failed while I was driving on the M50 motorway. There was no bang or loud noise when it happened, the engine just stopped working. The computer display in the car simply stated ‘check fuel injectors’. The car is being fixed at the moment, but as I have learned a lot about timing belts in the last week, I thought I would share it with you all. Continue reading
