Extension to Dublins Luas red line open, but is it too long?
Last Saturday saw the opening of a new section of the Dublin’s light rail system. The extension is 4 km long, runs between Belgard and Saggart Village and contains five new stops. Two of the stops contain park and ride facilities. I went along on the free open day to try it out. Continue reading

Why do steel railways not rust and fall apart?
Steel used in buildings has to be protected against corrosion. The typical solution is to coat the steel frame with anti-corrosion paint. So this leads us to the question, why are railway lines, which are also made of steel, left exposed to the elements without any protection at all? DART underground completed in Malmo, under budget and ahead of schedule
Irish rail users will be interested to note that the Malmo rail tunnel has opened last month. This project is very similar to the proposed DART underground scheme currently being designed for Dublin. The new Malmo rail tunnel runs below the city centre for 6 km and is part of a new 17km section of track which transforms the Malmo Central Station from a terminus to a through station.
